The Meteorological Department said on Monday morning that Typhoon Kajiki would weaken before entering the northern province of Nan on Tuesday evening.
Director-general Sukanyanee Yawinchan said on Monday morning the typhoon was in the upper South China Sea, about 200 kilometres southeast of Vinh city in northern Vietnam, and was moving northwestwards.
She said the typhoon would land in Vinh and weaken into a tropical storm on Monday.
On Tuesday morning it would be a depression reaching into Laos. It was likely the storm would lose power, become a strong low pressure system and arrive in Thailand’s Nan province on Tuesday evening.
Consequently, there would be heavy rain and strong wind in many areas of the upper Northeast on Monday and Tuesday and in the North from Monday to Wednesday.
Provinces most likely to be affected are Bung Kan, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Loei, Mae Hong Son, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, Phayao, Phrae, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani and Uttaradit, Ms Sukanyanee said.
There would be indirect impacts on the eastern provinces and the western part of the South.
