Flooding in Northern Thailand Affects Over 5,000 People

Heavy rains from former Storm Nongfa have caused significant flooding in five northern provinces of Thailand, impacting more than 5,000 residents. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported on Sunday that Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Phitsanulok, and Sukhothai were initially affected, with later reports confirming severe flooding in Phetchabun as well.

In Phetchabun, the Pasak River overflowed in the Lom Kao, Lom Sak, and Nam Nao districts after continuous rain throughout Saturday night. Lom Kao district chief Pornpong Chanchaipakrathakun stated that the flooding in tambon Tatkloi and tambon Sila is the worst in a decade. Strong currents have heavily inundated six villages in tambon Tatkloi, causing extensive property damage and complicating rescue efforts.

Rescue teams have been deployed to evacuate children, the elderly, and those who are bedridden to safer locations. Approximately 500 households in the two tambons of Lom Kao district have been affected.

Meanwhile, in Phitsanulok, runoff from the Phetchabun mountain range swept through homes in the Noen Maprang and Wang Thong districts early Sunday morning, leaving hundreds of people in a difficult situation.

The Meteorological Department has warned that the low-pressure system, which was once Storm Nongfa, will continue to bring increased rainfall across Thailand on Sunday and Monday.
